This clarity of information scratched a long-standing management itch. “Dimensions addressed a need that we’d been seeing for years, but the right solution had never materialised,” explains Tony Hubbard. “We could always tell whether project components were profitable, but sometimes it was too late. Good, reliable information gives you the confidence to renegotiate prices, if you have to.”

Because Dimensions needs concrete data to work with, it imposes a productive discipline on its users. “We’re now obliged to determine the value of the order from the outset, rather than proceeding on the basis of ‘cost to be agreed’,” says Tony.

Combining departments

Dimensions has also provided a major knock-on benefit in terms of Hubbards’ structure. The company has been able to integrate and streamline its accounts and purchasing departments, streamlining two important areas of the business. “The two areas were working with completely different, disjointed systems,” recalls Miles Watson. “Some tasks were being done twice, others not at all.”
“And duplication can only increase the chances of errors being made,” adds Tony Hubbard.

The upgrade was followed up with training delivered in-house by Onyx staff over several weeks. “The project management and training was highly professional,” comments Mark. “Onyx took a well-organised approach, creating training groups around our requirements and arranging dates and times to suit our needs.”

A side benefit, but an important one, is the reduction of paper use in the Hubbards office for documents such as surveyors’ reports. This helps the company deliver against the environmental targets of its ISO 14001 accreditation.
