Making several trips from Norwich to Peterborough before a purchasing decision had been made, Onyx developed a sense of 316’s business requirements and got to grips with the issues facing the company. The first step was to upgrade 316’s server, plus a number of less powerful workstations. “We were finding that one machine, in particular, wasn’t sufficiently reliable,” says Nick. “Also, we didn’t really have a server to store our data centrally – we had a machine that we backed up to every day, but it wasn’t a proper business server. So while we were upgrading the server, we thought that we might as well have some new, more powerful PCs at the same time.”
Following the hardware upgrade, Onyx will be delivering ongoing IT support to 316, addressing Nick’s concerns about reliable backups and protection from online threats. “We needed someone to monitor everything to ensure the data was being backed up correctly, and that all the necessary virus controls were in place,” he explains. “The best way to achieve that is by bringing everything under the control of a single supplier.”
316 also requested a proposal from another IT provider in Peterborough who had delivered services to them before, but eventually decided to go forward with Onyx. “Both companies were offering a very good service, and submitted strong proposals,” says Nick. “In the end, it came down to the question of who would give us a system and support it over the medium term.”
