Background

Age Concern Norfolk is a regional charity dedicated to promoting the wellbeing of older people in Norfolk. It was founded in 1947 and has its roots in the many clubs and groups run for older people throughout the county. It took on its first paid staff in the 1970s, and developed rapidly during the 1990s in response to new legislation on community care and contracting for services.

Today, Age Concern Norfolk comprises two respite homes and three day care centres. It employs around 150 people and oversees the work of more than 200 volunteers.

Contrary to popular belief, Age Concern is a federation of independent charities rather than a single nationwide organisation.

First steps

Age Concern Norfolk’s first contact with Onyx came from an existing relationship. “I previously worked at the Broads Authority, where Onyx oversaw a server upgrade for us,” says David Woodcock, Head of Finance and Administration. “When I arrived at Age Concern Norfolk in 2008, we were facing a similar situation – an ageing server in need of an upgrade. Based on what we needed to achieve, we sought quotes from three companies: our existing provider, another firm we’d dealt with and Onyx.”
