With Onyx confirmed as the chosen supplier, Raepak arranged the installation – which, as it turned out, had to be completed extremely quickly. “We had applied for an equipment grant from the East of England Development Agency [EEDA],” explains Andrew. “At first, we were rejected, but then someone dropped out and we were awarded some funds. However, their administrative timescales left a very small time window in which to spend our allocation and get everything installed. Incidentally, Paul was the only IT company sales consultant who made the effort to research other potential sources of funding when we thought our grant had fallen through.”
So how did the installation go? “I was delighted,” replies Andrew. “We had around two weeks to get all our equipment and software up and running. The software was installed off-site, and all the machines plus the server were installed with a very short downtime – which is absolutely fantastic for an entire-system change. The usual niggles came up, but they were soon sorted out and everything’s working perfectly.”
Andrew Paterson was particularly impressed by Onyx’s commitment to getting Raepak back up and running with the new equipment fully functional. “The dedication shown by Rob [Onyx’s Technical Director] to getting my installation right was fantastic,” he says. “One evening, we were both working until around 9.30pm, but Rob still returned to the Onyx office so some data could be uploaded overnight ready for the next day. That’s above and beyond what would be expected for our kind of project.”
The IT upgrade saw Raepak move from Windows XP to Windows 7, as well as adopting a new version of ACT!, and Onyx were on hand to make sure the team were comfortable with those changes. “After the installation, Mike from Onyx spent some time on site to support us,” says Andrew. “If, say, a printer wasn’t working, he sorted it out, and he was around to answer any questions we had. Later on, we’ve had to make a couple of calls, and they’ve been carefully logged and promptly dealt with. Onyx also provided invaluable support with the process of transferring our domain names and email from the incumbent provider.”
