As of July 9th 2019 Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will be end of support.

What does end of support mean to me?After the dates above your servers will no longer receive security updates. These updates include security pacthes that can help protect your server from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software which can steal your personal information. Windows Update also installs the latest software updates to improve the reliability of Windows—such as new drivers for your hardware.
Therefore, it’s important that you upgrade to a modern operating system such as Server 2016/2019, which can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safer. Of course your server applications such as accounting or CRM packages will need to be on a supported operating system so you can receive updates and support on them.

What should you do?

For Windows Server 2008 the direct replacement will be to upgrade to Server 2016/2019

What happens if I continue to use Server 2008?

You can continue to use the products but after support has ended but you will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Windows will continue to start and run, but you will no longer receive software updates, including security updates, from Microsoft.
